suede in the rain

There is something so exhilarating about getting completely soaking wet in a rainstorm. All of your pretensions fall away because there is nothing you can do...besides run...or just accept your fate of being drenched by downpour. While most of the US experiences 80 degree or hotter weather this week, in Vancouver, BC it is 60 degrees (fahrenheit) and an absolute fall monsoon. Yesterday the air was crisp and the sky was blue and clear...my favorite weather. Last night and through the entirety of today, it has been raining like it means it. Rivers are running in the streets. I heard that there was an earthquake in Vancouver in the early morning. It didn't wake me, you weren't able to feel it inland apparently, but i did awaken immediately afterward in a strange hotel room, scared, having forgotten where I was. Interesting because I stay in hotels often and never have that happen. I've never been in an earthquake before.
The Chicago Tribune says:

Vancouver Island has been struck by a magnitude-6.1 earthquake early Thursday.

The strong quake hit around 5:30 a.m. Its epicenter was located 293 miles west northwest of Vancouver and 97 miles west of Port Hardy, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It struck at a depth of 6.2 miles.

The quake was the latest in a series of coastal tremors since Monday. Two quakes rattled the area Wednesday, both with magnitudes of around 5. There have been 18 quakes in the region this week.

Seismologists said the tremors are occurring in a "seismically active" region, and they are too far offshore to be felt on land and too small to generate a tsunami.

It's a funny thing to have never even considered a tsunami as something that could affect me. Growing up landlocked in Kansas, I feared tornados destructive power, never even having to pause to consider the power of the ocean. Now as I gear up to head back inland to Colorado for my vacation, I have hot days and cool nights in my future. Blue skies, clean air, the smell of mountains, trees and the ever present danger of forest fires.

ps "suede in the rain" is a song idea that my work partner had today...I find it hilarious...I imagine it to the tune of Patrick Swayze's song from Dirty Dancing "She's like the Wind". Amazing.
